Civil War Events

 

Winchester-Frederick County hosts a wide variety of Civil War events each year. Guided tours, living history demonstrations, National Park Service programs, and reenactments are just a few of the ways to experience the Civil War history of the Shenandoah Valley.

August 18-20, 2017

Civil War Weekend is a special annual event that offers rare opportunities to see many sites as they may have looked at the time of the war. This year, Civil War sites throughout the area will join together to provide unique opportunities to experience the area’s remarkable wartime story.

Kernstown Battlefield / Stonewall Jackson's Headquarters

Saturday, August 19, 10am-4pm | $20 includes lunch
Stonewall Jackson Seminar

The Kernstown Battlefield Association and Stonewall Jackson’s Headquarters Museum will present a one day seminar on Thomas J. “Stonewall” Jackson. Each of the sponsoring organizations will give a special tour from 10am to 11:30 am and again from 2:30 pm to 4 pm. Our guest speakers, Steve French and Jerry Holsworth, both authors and historians, will discuss Jackson’s 1862 campaign leading up to and including the First Battle of Kernstown. Car Caravan Tour - "A Gleam of Anxious Speculation: The African Americans' Civil War in Winchester

Meet at the Winchester-Frederick County Visitors Center (1400 Pleasant Valley Road, Winchester) for a car caravan tour led by Jonathan Noyalas, Director of the McCormick Civil War Institute at Shenandoah University. The tour will focus on the experiences of African Americans during the Civil War era. Tour is approximately 1.5 hours in length.
