Scottish "Backyard" Highland Games
The Kernstown Battlefield Association (KBA) and Clan Adrenalin
will host its second “backyard” Highland games of the season. The backyard game is a smaller one than the one we will host in July, with only the competition taking place.
Scottish Highland warriors competed against each other between battles. They used ordinary objects in their competitions: weights, stones, hammers and tree trunks (“cabers”).
In addition to many talented local throwers, we welcome New England thrower Terri James. Terri is the Woman’s World Masters Champion for 2003, 2004 and 2005. She is in the Scottish Masters Athletics International Hall of Fame.
Many of Saturday’s competitors participated in the World Masters Championship last summer in Iceland. There will be over 30 throwers on Saturday, coming from as far away as New England and Atlanta. The throwers range in age from 11 to 55.
The Armstrong Irish Dance Academy will be performing at 11:30 am and 12:15 pm. Come watch dancers of all ages and levels enjoy their dancing.
At approximately noon, Leah Martin of the Virginia Falconers’ Association will give falconry demonstrations with a hawk and an owl. The Virginia Falconers’ Association is dedicated to the preservation, education, and sustainability of the ancient art of falconry in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Shaffer’s Shenandoah Valley Barbeque of Middletown will bring their food truck at 11 am and serve BBQ until after the games. Shaffer’s menu will include beef and pork BBQ, ribs, Cajun chicken, Brunswick stew, baked beans, cole slaw, homemade cookies and pies. They also will have coffee, water, soda and locally pressed apple cider. Please come hungry!
