Pennsylvania Couples Began Long-Lasting Marriages in Winchester, VA

You Should Too.....

Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Miller married in Winchester in February of 1953.  The future Mrs. Miller was a recent graduate of a nursing school. Mr. Miller was in his senior year at the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science (now known as the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia.) They planned to be married in Winchester during Mr. Miller’s break.  They wrote for marriage information to Lee N. Whitacre, Clerk of Winchester Circuit Court, and traveled to Winchester in February 1953, to be married February 4th.  The couple arrived 25 minutes before the court closed, received their license, and married at the First Evangelical United Brethren Church. The couple, now married 57 years, says that Virginia did an outstanding job in our marriage; it took!”

Another Pennsylvania couple, Mr. and Mrs. William Adams, married in Winchester in October 1979.  The couple started their quest to get married in Maryland. However, once there they learned there was a 3 hour waiting period, so they drove on to Winchester, VA. Their adventures included hitting a skunk while in route, going 30 hours without sleep, getting their license 15 minutes before the court closed, and waiting in line with 12 other couples to get married by Martha Grim, a Justice of the Peace.  Mr. and Mrs. Adams have been married for over 30 years.  They have 10 children and 20 grandchildren. “There is no one that I would want to send the rest of my life with more than my husband,” Ms. Adams wrote.  “I love him with all my heart.”
