Belle Grove Plantation

This antebellum plantation manor house, owned by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, was originally home to Major Isaac Hite and his wife Nelly, sister of President James Madison. In 1864, the Battle of Cedar Creek raged around the mansion, but it was remarkably unscathed.
Visitors can tour the restored 1797 Manor House on a guided tour (fee) and explore the plantation grounds, 1815 icehouse and smokehouse, demonstration garden designed by the Garden Club of Virginia, slave cemetery, a heritage apple orchard and museum gift shop.
