Why the Experience of Awe is Good for You, Except When it isn’t with Dr. John D. Copenhaver, Jr.
Dr. John D. Copenhaver is Professor Emeritus of Religion and Philosophy at Shenandoah University. He attended college at Washington and Lee University, majoring in European History. Following college, he attended Fuller Theological Seminary before being ordained in the United Methodist Church in 1977. He earned the Ph.D. in religion and culture at The Catholic University of America.
Following campus ministry at James Madison University, he came to Shenandoah University in 1987 as chaplain and assistant professor of religion. He taught for twenty-seven years at the University and served as Chair of the Department of Religion for eighteen years. While teaching he served on the National Council of the Fellowship of Reconciliation, the oldest and largest interfaith peacemaking organization, and the National Board of Theta Alpha Kappa, the national honor society for religious studies and theology. He is the author of Prayerful Responsibility. Since his retirement in 2014 he has been working for a more just and compassionate commonwealth through the Virginia Interfaith Center for Public Policy (VICPP).
