Civil War Historical Impressions

The Civil War Historical Impressions, Inc. will be joining us for the weekend. CWHI is an independent 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. They are a group of Civil War Educators, Living Historians and Reenactors committed to teaching through lectures, encampments, school events and battle scenarios to name a few. Opening Weekend at Kernstown Battlefield

Join us for opening weekend at the Kernstown Battlefield. There will be tours of the Battlefield, the 1854 Pritchard House, the Museum and the Artillery Annex. The Gift Shop also will be open. Other activities to be announced.

First Battle of Kernstown Tour

On April 17, 2021 the Kernstown Battlefield Association (KBA) will host a walking and driving tour of the First Battle of Kernstown. KBA docents Larry Turner and Mike Cannane (pictured) will lead this tour starting at 10am. Attendees should meet at the Visitor Center and dress appropriately for walking across fields, pastures and woods.
The morning will consist of a walking tour of the Kernstown Battlefield property with descriptions of cavalry and artillery actions from the perspective of Union forces on Pritchard’s Hill and Confederate forces from Apple Valley Road.

The afternoon driving portion begins at 1pm near Old Town Winchester with a detailed description of Confederate cavalry reconnaissance and the wounding of Union Maj. Gen. James Shields. This will be followed by visits to the Confederate artillery park south of the Opequon Church and discussions at our “Jackson’s Lookout” viewing platform about the Confederate maneuvers and Jackson’s decision to attack. We will then travel on to Rose Hill Park and Sandy Ridge for continued discussions on the battle during the afternoon of March 23, 1862.
KBA will arrange a lunch for purchase to be delivered at noon. It is suggested that you bring water and dress appropriately for the weather. Masks will be required and social distancing observed.

Civil War Winchester – Pen In Hand

On Saturday, March 23, 2019, at 6:00 PM on the 157th anniversary of the First Battle of Kernstown, the public is invited to join us at the Shenandoah Valley Civil War Museum in Winchester for a free viewing and discussion of the movie, Winchester – Pen in Hand.

The film provides a unique look at Winchester, Virginia’s inhabitants during the Civil War from the viewpoint of their letters, diaries and journals. Battle of First Kernstown Anniversary

The Kernstown Battlefield will be open on this special day to commemorate the 159th Anniversary of the First Battle of Kernstown. Tours of the battlefield will be available, and the battlefield Visitors Center and gift shop will also be open.

Kernstown Battlefield will officially open for the 2021 season on April 10.

Shenandoah University McCormick Civil War Institute’s Annual Spring Conference

“So Tired & Exhausted”: In Battle’s Aftermath
On the campus of Shenandoah University, Winchester, Virginia

The McCormick Civil War Institute’s 2023 spring conference will explore the many ways Civil War battles impacted soldiers and civilians both in the immediate aftermath of battle and for decades after the conflict.

Registration fee of $30 covers cost of all presentations and lunch in Allen Dining Hall.

Spirits of the Valley

Frederick County Parks and Recreation and the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley invite you to experience Spirits of the Valley, an evening of food, wine, and history.

The evening will feature a walking tour of the historic and haunted Rose Hill Park trail, a complimentary glass of wine, and a Southern-inspired meal provided at Valerie Hill Vineyard and Winery by Village Square Restaurant.

The evening’s battlefield walk will feature encounters with living history interpreters who will share events from the 1860s. This is a one-of-a-kind experience you won’t want to miss!

Cost:$50 per person (21+ only)
Price includes trail tour, a glass of wine, and dinner. Any additional food/beverage purchases must be made on your own at the winery. Vegetarian meal available upon request. Alcohol is not permitted at Rose Hill Park.

Please arrive at the Winery at 5:30 p.m. for check in–Tour time is 6 p.m; Dinner time is 7:30 p.m.. Winery will close at 10 p.m. sharp.

North-South Skirmish Association’s National Competition

The North-South Skirmish Association will hold its National Competition at Fort Shenandoah near Winchester, Virginia. Member units compete in live-fire matches with original or authentic reproduction Civil War period muskets, carbines, breech loading rifles, revolvers, mortars and cannons. It is the largest Civil War event of its kind in the United States.

The N-SSA is the country’s oldest and largest Civil War shooting sports organization with over 3,200 individuals that make up its 200 member units. Each unit represents a Civil War regiment or unit and wears the uniform they wore over 150 years ago.

N-SSA members come from all over the country to Fort Shenandoah each spring for this National competition that traditionally opens the year’s activities. Competitions, called “skirmishes”, will be held throughout the summer on a regional basis. At a skirmish, participating teams shoot at breakable targets in several timed events. The teams with the lowest cumulative times win medals or other awards. Women participate along with the men in all events. There are also competitions for authenticity of Civil War period dress, both military and civilian, as well as lectures on topics of interest.

Spectators are welcome and admission and parking are free. There is a large sutler area and food service is available.
