Join the National Park Service with the Shenandoah Astronomical Society for 3 FREE Star Parties

As part of the National Park Service’s “Find Your Park” campaign, these programs encourage visitors to explore Cedar Creek and Belle Grove National Historical Park in a variety of ways and to discover the night sky in a quiet and peaceful setting.

April 13th at 7:30 p.m.
August 10th at 8:00 p.m. (Perseid Meteor Shower)
October 26th at 6:00 p.m.

Each program will include a short introduction by a park ranger, followed by an astronomical related program given by a member of the SAS. Visitors are welcomed to bring their own telescopes, or use the ones that will be provided by the Shenandoah Astronomical Society.

The star parties will be held at the Shenandoah Valley Battlefields Foundation Thoburn Redoubt tract.

Directions to the site:

1. Just south of Middletown, from U.S. Route 11, turn left onto Water Plant Road. Proceed 1 mile to the intersection with Long Meadow Road.
2. Turn right onto Long Meadow Road. Proceed 0.1 mile.
3. Turn right onto Bowman’s Mill Road. Proceed 1.4 miles to Thoburn Redoubt.
4. The Thoburn Tract is marked by a Civil War Trails sign and some Waysides. Turn right into the property.

Olde Towne Halloween Faire

New Halloween event this year! Old Town businesses will be hosting games and treats starting at 4pm. Each participating shop will have a decorated storefront and a game of their own, such as mummy bowling and witches’ hat ring toss. After trick-or-treating, the faire will conclude with the movie “Hocus Pocus” at 7pm in the Taylor Pavilion.

Ravenwood Faire

The Ravenwood Faire is proud to announce its first Faire Weekend. Located at the Frederick County Fairgrounds-October 26-27, 2019 (10:00am-7:00pm). A wonderful array of wares, artisans, food, drink, and entertainment. Come one, Come all! Children 12 and under are free.

Activities include:

• Metal working and historical jewelry making demonstrations, falconry demonstrations, and artisans

• Performances by the Lohr Family and Mason-Dixon Border Morris

• Live music by Merlin’s Beard Band, Kilts and Daggers, and Brian Coughlan

• Historical medicinal plant walk with Wisteria Herbs

• Turkey legs, meat pies, scotch eggs, and apple pie by Ambrosia Catering

• Local beer, cider, and mead

• Crafts and activities for children

Halloween Costume Contest and Trunk or Treat

It’s our annual Halloween Trunk or Treat & Costume Contest. Held on two Saturdays in October (Saturday, October 19th & 26th). Magic shows by Kevin Owens, face painting, games, and costume contest for children, teens, adults and pets. Trunk or treating before movies! Movies will include Maleficent 2 and The Addams Family plus horror movies on Screen 2 (to be determined and announced closer to event dates). This event is our most popular event of the season and is held over two Saturday’s to manage crowd size. Tickets will be published closer to the event. Movies will follow after Trunk or Treat.

6th Annual Parks and Pets Extravaganza

Join Frederick County Parks and Recreation for their 6th annual Parks and Pets Extravaganza on Saturday, October 5th from 10am-3pm. At their new location, Clearbrook Park, expect all kinds of activities for you and your pet including:

-Silent auction with proceeds benefiting the Frederick County Esther Boyd Animal Shelter

-Demos by the Frederick County Fire and Rescue and Frederick County Sheriff’s Office

-An assortment of food vendors

-Vendors for all your pets’ needs

Solenberger’s True Value Hardware Car/Truck/Motorcycle Show

Come see the prettiest cars in the Shenandoah Valley and enjoy building community with your friends and neighbors. Registration from 9-12. $10 entry fee which goes to the Winchester Rescue Mission. Show open to all makes and models. Participant voting. Dash plaques to the first 100 registered. Trophies for the top 20 in both classes. First Class up to 1979, Second Class 1980 and up.
