Middletown Memorial Day Service

Marine Corps veteran Winsome Sears of Frederick County, who is running as a running for Virginia lieutenant governor in the Nov. 2 election, will be the keynote speaker at Middletown’s Memorial Day service at 1 p.m. Monday. There also will be a wreath-laying and posting of colors.

The event will be held in-person and streamed via Facebook live.

Memorial Day at Valerie Hill

This Memorial Day, celebrate those who paid the ultimate sacrifice to our country with great food, great entertainment, and great wine at Valerie Hill! Starting at noon we’ll be serving fresh pork BBQ with coleslaw and chips for $10 per person – Wine Club members are FREE!

At 1pm, local musician Jimmy Lee will entertain with acoustic hits that span the decades. Then join us as we pay respect to the fallen with our Missing Man Table Ceremony – an emotionally moving moment led by our own veteran, Mr. Phil Newcome.

And of course, we’ll be pouring all your favorite Valerie Hill wines and our popular sangrias all day! Make plans to join us for an awesome Memorial Day at Valerie Hill! (Due to the popularity of our holiday events, lawn chairs are recommended.)

Loudoun Street Mile

Celebrate Memorial Day by running in the Loudoun Street Mile! This event consists of a mile run, a fitness walk, and a tot trot.

This 34th annual edition of the Loudoun Street Mile traverses Loudoun Street in Historic Old Town Winchester, Virginia. This year’s race will again serve as the Collegiate Running Association Championship race. Prize money will be awarded!

Healing Field of Honor

The Rotary Club of Winchester will honor loved ones, military veterans and first responders May 27 through Memorial Day at the Healing Field of Honor on the front campus of Handley High School. As many as a thousand American flags will stand in solemn tribute.

The opening ceremony, set for 6 p.m., May 27, will feature a “low and slow” C-17 flyover and parachuting skydivers. Seating is limited, so bring your own chair if you wish. Flags may be purchased onsite for $40. There is no cost to visit the Healing Field of Honor.

The closing ceremony will be 3 p. m. Monday, May 31. Keynote speaker is Ken Falks, founder of Boulder Crest Retreat for wounded soldiers in Bluemont.

Memorial Day Observance

A Memorial Day observance will be held at Winchester National Cemetery with keynote speaker Anthony Barnes, Veterans Outreach Specialist for Rep. Jennifer Wexton, D-10th.

Prior to Memorial Day, and in preparation for the event, the community is invited to Winchester National Cemetery in the yearly tradition, known as ‘Flags In’ by placing an American Flag at the headstone of the more than 5,500 Veterans resting at Winchester National Cemetery.
